Although the smaller of the two major cities, Goshen is the county seat of Elkhart County. The fairgrounds where we’ll gather for this special “Family Reunion” is noted to be the second largest county fair in the United States. One of their special claims to fame is that the Wal-Mart located on the southeast side of town is the first in the United States to provide a covered stable for its frequent Amish Customers!!
The city of Elkhart is located just north of Goshen. It is a little city with big ideas. Although its population barely exceeds 45,000 its people are employed in a variety of industries that would do credit to a city several times its size. It is the center of the manufactured housing and recreational vehicle industry and an important source for components for the electronic industry. It is also known as the band instrument capital of the world.
There is plenty to see in the Michiana area. One of the most popular local attractions is Shipshewana. Site of one of the country’s largest flea markets, it is only a short drive from the fairgrounds. The University of Notre Dame and the College Football Hall of Fame are located in nearby South Bend. Both are available for tours. The Northern Indiana Museum of History includes the Studebaker Museum and Capshaholm, the former home of the Oliver family (inventor of the chilled plow).
Not to be missed is the RV Hall of Fame and Museum in its brand new location that opened in 2007. You’ll see some of the vehicles that started the recreational vehicle craze.
Tours through the local Amish Country will be offered along with a typical Amish family style lunch.
You’ll be able to take a tour, shop at the flea market, sample the local Amish cooking AND join fellow campers at a special Halloween themed FAMILY REUNION complete with a pig roast and apple dunking contest. Make plans and join us in Goshen in 2010.
